India comes at number 142 on the World Press Freedom Index list of 180 countries. India's position has been steadily falling for the last four years.
In this case India lags behind its neighboring countries Nepal (112), Bhutan (67), Sri Lanka (127) and Myanmar (139). However, Pakistan (145), Bangladesh (151) and China (177) have worse situation than India. India's position has been sliding down for the last four years. India was ranked 133 in 2016, having slipped three points to 136 in 2017, 138 in 2018, 140 in 2019 and 142 in 2020. India's position has been falling by two points each for the last three years.

198 attacks on journalists in five years in India
According to a report, there have been 198 attacks on journalists in India from 2014 to 2019. There were 36 attacks in the year 2019. The journalist was killed in 40 attacks, including 21 of those directly angered by the news release. In the third cases of total attacks, no FIR has been reported.

The purpose of celebrating World Press Freedom Day
Journalists and the press are tortured in many countries around the world. Governments harass media organizations. They are fined, raided. Also, advertising is stopped and financially harmed. There are attacks on journalists. Due to this UNESCO started celebrating World Press Freedom Day from 1993. On this occasion citizens and governments are motivated to make themselves responsible. UNESCO decides its theme and host country every year. This year's theme 'Safety of Journalist-Press Freedom and Media Capture' was put on and hosted by the Netherlands.

That's why World Press Freedom Day is celebrated on May 3
In 1991, journalists in Africa took an initiative to press freedom. UNESCO held a conference in Namibia regarding this. The conference ran from 29 April to 3 May. After this, a statement related to freedom of the press was issued. This is called 'Declaration of Windhoek'. Actually, Windhoek is the capital of Namibia. In 1993, the second birth anniversary of this conference, UNESCO and the United Nations General Assembly decided to celebrate World Press Freedom Day on May 3 every year. Since then, this day is celebrated every year on 3 May.

Norway at number one and North Korea at last
Norway is ranked first in the 2020 World Press Freedom Index and North Korea is at number one. Norway has been at number one on this list for four consecutive years. At the same time, North Korea was also last in 2018. In 2019 it came up one point and reached the last place East African country Eritrea. Ever since this index has come up, North Korea and Eritrea have been the last rungs.

Corona epidemic affected the media
Christophe Deloer, the secretary general of the Reporter Without Borders, an organization that monitors the security of journalists around the world, said that the Korna epidemic has impacted the media worldwide. There are many countries including China, Iran and Iraq, where the media did not give the right information under pressure from the government. China's Press Freedom Index ranks 177, Iraq 162 and Hungary 89.
